Box Score ALLIANCE — Mount Union defeated John Carroll 52-27 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Friday night at Mount Union Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.) threw for seven touchdowns and 521 yards as he completed 38 passes on a school-record 58 attempts to lead the Purple Raiders to a 2-0 start to the season.
Junior wide receiver Wayne Ruby (Miami, Fla. / Flanagan) was one catch off a school record with 16 catches for a career-high 182 yards and four touchdown catches. The rest of the receiving corps also had big days as senior Derrick Harvey, Jr. (Akron / Buchtel) had 149 yards on seven catches, Ulice Gillard (Orlando, Fla. / Lake Nona) with 91 yards on six catches and a touchdown while Jaden Manley (Columbus / Bishop Hartley) had five catches for 84 yards and two scores.
The Raider defense got six tackles and a sack from Carson Kovath (Brighton, Mich. / Catholic Central), Jesse Vail (Estero, Fla.) had six tackles and an interception while Malik Britt (Bossier City, La. / Airline) and Marcus Saahir (Akron / Hoban) each had interceptions.
John Carroll (1-1) got 247 yards passing and three touchdowns from quarterback Jake Floriea in the defeat.
A 48-yard return by KJ Redmon (Fairborn) opened the game set up the Raiders in John Carroll territory and eight plays later Plunk tossed a one-yard touchdown pass to Ruby to make it 7-0. The defense forced a three-and-out and another eight-play Mount Union drive was capped by another Plunk to Ruby this time from four yards out and then it was 14-0 with 5:52 left in the first quarter.
John Carroll held the Raiders to a pair of three and outs and came back with a pair of touchdowns, a 54-yard touchdown pass from Floriea to Brennan Fugh and a 16-yard run from Demerius Goodwin to tie the game at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.
JCU linebacker Brian Robinson forced a fumble on a sack of Plunk on Mount Union's first possession of the second quarter and the Streaks took the lead, 21-14, as Devin Limerick caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Floriea.
Mount Union answered with three more Plunk TD passes — four yards to Ruby, a 19-yarder to Manley and a 10-yard strike to Ruby and the Raiders led 35-14 at halftime.
John Carroll ended the Raiders 21-0 run on the opening drive in the second half as Florida led the Streaks 75 yards on eight plays and threw an eight-yard TD pass to Fugh but the extra point was no good and Mount Union led 35-27.
Mount Union came right back down and Plunk tossed his sixth touchdown of the day and second to Manley to put the Raiders up 42-27 at the end of third quarter.
Plunk then tossed his seventh touchdown pass of the game on the Raiders first drive of the fourth quarter finding Gillard from 36 yards out.
The scoring finished with a 26-yard Thomas Piccirillo (Findlay / Van Buren) field goal.
