Baseball: Mount Union Bashes Its Way To Split at John Carroll

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio – Mount Union's baseball bats were silenced in game one but came alive in game two as the Purple Raiders split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games Saturday at John Carroll.

Mount Union belted out a season-high 18 runs on 17 hits in an 18-2 game stopped in seven innings in the nightcap after John Carroll held the Raiders to two runs on seven hits in a 3-2 Blue Streak win in the opener.

The split leaves Mount Union at 14-6 overall and 12-6 in the OAC at the season's halfway mark, while John Carroll is now 11-9-1 overall and 8-8-1 in the OAC.

The Raiders scored in five of the seven innings as 10 different players had an RBI in an 18-2 rout.

Corey White (Louisville) drove in four runs on four hits, Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) had four hits, while Lou Cardona (Boardman) and Garrett Bischof (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) each had three RBI to lead the Mount Union offense.

This was all more than enough for pitcher Carson Davis (Louisvlle), who allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.

In the opener, Mount Union got a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single from White. John Carroll tied it up on a Justin Hanle homer in the bottom of the fourth and then added two more runs on a Jack Bennett single in the fifth to lead 3-1.

Mount Union rallied with a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Weaver, but the Raiders stranded him on third base. In the ninth, the Raiders got the tying run to second base and the rally ended there.

Mitchell Midea scattered two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings for the win for John Carroll and John Merrill allowed only two hits over final two innings for a save.

Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) surrendered three runs, two earned, on six hits over 6.0 innings but took his first loss of the season for Mount Union.

The same two teams play a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. in Alliance.
