Box Score 2 ADA, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team got a pair of wins, 6-1 and 15-7, against Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at Wander Field.
Mount Union is now 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern falls to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in the OAC.
In the opener, Zach Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) and Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) each had two hits and the Raiders took advantage of four Northern errors in a 6-1 win.
In the top of the second, Corey White (Louisville) got to second base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield then Lou Cardona (Boardman) drove him in on the next at-bat with a double to left field to give the Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Mount Union got another run in the third as Mazza doubled then stole third and came home on an Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) ground-out as the Raiders took a 2-0 lead.
Northern got one of those runs back in the fourth to make it 2-1 but the Raiders came back in the sixth as Trey Weaver led of the inning with a double, advanced to third on an error and came home on a wild pitch to take the score to 3-1.
Two more Northern errors in the seventh allowed Mount Union to add another run and push the lead to 4-1.
Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) got hit by a pitch in the eighth, then stole second and third before coming home on a Mazza sacrifice fly and the Raiders then led 5-1.
Marlowe then finished the scoring for Mount Union at 6-1 with an RBI single in the ninth.
All of this was more than enough for Raider ace Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial), who went 8.1 innings and allowed a run on six hits with four strikeouts to move to 3-0 on the season.
Chayten Overholt had two hits and Nate Bye allowed only one earned run in six innings but took the loss for Ohio Northern.
Mount Union belted out 20 hits in a 15-7 win in game two. Marlowe drove in five runs on three hits as seven different Raiders had multi-hit games.
Marlowe and Mazza got it going for the Raiders in game two as each drove in two runs in a four-run second inning to get the Raiders out to a 4-0 lead.
Mount Union got a lead-off walk by Weaver and a hit by Cardona to start the third then Marlowe came through again with an RBI single and later scored on a Northern error and the Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
Northern got one back in the bottom of the third but the Raiders responded in the top of the fourth as RJ Dean (Walton Hills / Cuyahoga Hts.) started the inning with a single, stole second and came home on a Schilling double. Schilling then scored on a Weaver double and Mount Union was ahead 8-1.
The Raiders then blew the game open with a five-run six inning to lead 13-1. Schilling started the inning with a homer, Cardona, Marlowe and Dean each drove in runs and Mazza got a bases loaded walk.
Northern scored five in the bottom of the sixth to close to gap to 13-6.
Mount Union tacked on single runs in the seventh on a Marlowe single and in the eighth on a Weaver sacrifice fly to take the score to 15-6. Northern got a run in the eighth for the 15-7 final.
Carson Davis went five innings to get the win and Jeremy Sassano went the final 3.1 innings for the save for Mount Union.
Alex Dodson gave up six runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss for the Polar Bears.
The same two teams play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alliance.
