Box Score 2 BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union rallied for a split at Baldwin Wallace in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games Monday at Fisher Field. The Purple Raiders won the nightcap 9-0 after falling 8-4 in the opener.
The Purple Raiders, which lost for the first time since April 17, are now 27-7 overall and 25-7 in the OAC, while Baldwin Wallace is now 19-14-1 overall and 18-11-1 in the OAC.
In the nightcap, Mount Union starter Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) shut down the Jacket bats as he allowed just three hits with the complete game shutout.
At the plate, Mount Union took advantage of two BW errors to plate a run in the fourth on a Lou Cardona (Boardman) single. The Jackets committed two more errors in the sixth that the Raiders turned into three runs as Stauffer fielders' choice brought in one and a two-run double by Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) and the score was 4-0.
Mount Union added a run in the seventh as Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) led off the inning with a double and later came around on a two-out single by Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve).
Five walks and another BW error in the ninth set up a two-run single by Marlowe and the Raiders scored four more runs to push the lead to 9-0
In the opener, BW scored a run in the bottom of the first then blew the game open with a seven-run third inning to lead 8-0.
Mount Union tried to rally as they loaded the bases in the fourth and got just a single run on a a bases loaded walk by Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic). The Raiders loaded the bases again in the sixth and again had a to settle for just a bases loaded walk this time from Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark).
Mazza did get the Raiders two more runs in the eighth on his league leading 11th home run of the season to make it 8-4 but the rally ended there.
Mazza was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Marlowe and Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) each had two hits for Mount Union.
Alex Ludwick had three hits for BW, Brendon Hink allowed just a run on three hits for the win on the mound while Drew Wilson pitched the final four innings for a save.
Ryan Osman (Moon, Pa. / Moon Area) lost for the first time in his last four starts as he surrender eight runs, five earned over 4.2 innings. Cole Robinson (Lewis Center / Olentangy) gave the Raiders a chance to come back allowing just one hit over the final 3.1 innings.
Mount Union closes out the regular season with a four-game series against Marietta with Saturday's doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Rafeld-Rogers Field in Alliance.
