Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union lost back-to-back games on the same day for the first time this season suffering 10-0 in eight innings in game one and 6-3 in 10 innings in game two to No. 7 ranked Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
It was the final regular season home games for the Purple Raiders, who fall to 27-9 overall and 25-9 in the OAC. Marietta improves to 30-4 and 27-3 in the OAC.
In game one, Marietta scored a run in the third inning with three hits that did not leave the infield to plate one run then a Mount Union error got two more across the plate and the Pioneers led 3-0.
Marietta took advantage of a hit batter and a walk sandwiched between an RBI double from Drew Holderbach and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Albright to push the lead to 5-0.
Mount Union's best chance at scoring was in the fifth when the Raiders got two runners but could not get a run across.
The Pioneers tacked on a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth for the 10-0 final.
Geno Sabatine allowed just five hits over seven innings to go to 8-0 in the season for Marietta while Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) suffered just his second loss of the season for Mount Union as he gave up six runs, four earned over 5.2 innings.
In game two, Mount Union got on the board first in the fourth inning when Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) had a two-out RBI single to put the Raiders up 1-0.
Marietta came right back in the fifth with a leadoff walk, then a double, before scoring a single from Trent Castle tied the game. The Pioneers then scored a run on a squeeze play bunt from Jared Weiss to take a 2-1 lead then made it 3-1 on a Turner Hill RBI single.
A Lou Cardona (Boardman) single and Brian Livolsi (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) double gave the Raiders runners at second and third with no one out in the sixth but managed only one run on a Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) ground out to close the deficit to 3-2.
Mount Union threated again in the seventh getting runners on second and third and did not score but the Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI single from Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) to send it to extra innings.
Marietta put three runs on the board in the 10th with big hit coming on a two-run home run from Nate Rentas.
Sam Matthews got the win in relief for Marietta while Billy Keller (Medina / Highland) took the loss out of the pen for Mount Union.
