Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team wrapped up the regular season with losses of 6-5 in 11 innings and 11-1 against No. 7 ranked Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Don and Sue Schaly Field at Pioneer Park.
The Purple Raiders ended up taking two of the four games to extra innings, but ultimately fell to 27-11 overall and with the second-best record in the OAC at 25-11.
Marietta now stands at 32-4 overall and at 29-3 in the OAC, the Pioneers have the best record in the conference.
Mount Union got out to a 2-0 lead after 4.5 innings of game one. The Raiders scored their first run in the third as Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, got to third on a single from Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) and eventually scored when Mazza was caught in a run down trying to steal second. Mount Union's second run came in the fifth on a solo home run by Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison).
Marietta would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer from Drew Holderbach, but Mount Union would come back in the seventh as again Stauffer drew a lead-off walk then eventually scored on a Nate Duliba (Middleburg Hts. / Berea-Midpark) double to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead.
The Pioneers would get a lead-off walk of their own to start the bottom of the seventh and again Holderbach delivered this time with an RBI ground-out to tie the game at 3-3.
The game would stay tied until the 11th when Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) walked to start the frame and was lifted for pinch runner David Toot (Lisbon / David Anderson). Toot would score on a Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) double and he would score on a Stauffer single as Mount Union retook the lead, 5-3.
Marietta tied the game in the bottom half of the inning again by Holderbach, this time it was a double that drove in two before Trent Castle ended it with his third hit of the game, an RBI single. Holderbach ended up driving in five of Marietta's six runs.
In the nightcap, Mount Union again got the lead first as Mazza led off the game with his OAC leading 12th home run of the season.
The Pioneers would again come right back with three runs in the bottom of the first and go on to score a total of 11 unanswered in an 11-1 win in seven innings.
Mazza had three of the Raiders seven hits for the game.
Mount Union will wait for the draw for the OAC Tournament to see when and who they are hosting in the six-team tournament.
