Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 2 seed Mount Union suffered a pair of losses to top-seeded and No. 4 nationally ranked Marietta in the championship series of the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday at Don and Sue Schaly Field at Pioneer Park.
Marietta got an 8-7 win in 13 innings in game one and a 3-2 win in in the nightcap to move to 35-4 overall, win the OAC Tournament title for a record 32nd time and will take the conference's automatic bid to next week's NCAA Tournament.
Mount Union, playing in the OAC championship game for the first time since 2017, ends its season at 28-13.
The opener was the longest played game in OAC Tournament history in 13 innings and featured three ties and three lead changes.
Kail Hill got a two-out double and Drew Wilkinson followed with a ball hit to right field that was misplayed and brought home the winning run for Marietta in the bottom of the 13 th.
Marietta started the game with a pair of ground rule doubles which sparked a three-run inning and gave the Pioneers an early lead.
Mount Union came back with a run in the second as Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) had an RBI single to make it 3-1.
The Pioneers then added two more in the third as Wilkinson drove in two runs with a two-out single.
The Raiders drew a pair of walks to start the fourth inning and both game home on a Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) ground out and a Stauffer single. Mount Union then tied the game at 5-5 and completed a four-run frame with a two-run single from Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic).
Mount Union took its first lead of the game in the sixth as Marietta walked Mazza to load the bases with two outs and Nate Duliba (Middleburg Heights / Berea-Midpark) had an infield single to bring home a run and make it 6-5.
Marietta manufactured a run in the seventh as Dylan Albright led off with a walk, was lifted for a pinch runner in Rodreco Rachel. Rachel was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then to third on a Brady Cotton single and tied the game at 6-6 on a wild pitch.
The game stayed tied until two outs in the top of the 10th when Stauffer was hit by a pitch. Stauffer went to second on a Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) single then scored on a Mazza single up the middle.
The Raiders had two outs in the bottom half of the frame when Logan Vietmeier hit a solo home run to tie it back up.
Mount Union got runners in scoring position in the 11th and 12th but did not score.
Mazza ended up with three hits and three RBI, Stauffer had three hits and two RBI and Duliba had three hits with an RBI to lead the offense for Mount Union.
Carson Davis (Louisville) and Ryan Osman (Moon, Pa. / Moon Township) both pitched 6.1 innings for the Raiders with Osman taking the los and falling to 3-3 on the year.
Marietta had four pitchers go in the game and Isaac Danford held Mount Union to one hit over the final 3.1 innings for the win.
In the nightcap, Marietta again got three hits in the first inning, the last one an RBI single from Vietmeier, gave the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the top of the sixth inning when Mount Union tied it up as Brian Livolsi (MacMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) hit a two-out double and scored on a single from Chase Angotti (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold).
The Pioneers came right back in the bottom of the sixth and retook the lead as Vietmeier doubled, sacrificed to third and came home on an RBI single from Castle.
Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) tied the game back up for Mount Union with a solo home run to right field in the top of the eighth.
Marietta rallied again in the bottom of the ninth as Nick Bonnizzio singled to start the inning and eventually scored the winning run on a Dylan Albright single.
Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) started for Mount Union and allowed two runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings, while Billy Keller went the final 3.1 innings and allowed just a run on three hits to take the loss.
Trent Valentine held Raider hitters to a run on five hits over the first six innings for Marietta and Kail Hill went the final three innings to pick up the win in relief.
