Purple Raiders Sweep Westminster On Day 1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Mount Union women's volleyball team defeated Westminster (Pa.) Friday night at Carnegie Mellon University.
 
The Purple Raiders now 12-1 overall on the season posted scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-17 as Westminster fell to 11-3 on the season.
 
In the first set the Mount Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Westminster responded with three points of its own. Both teams kept the score within three with Westminster taking a 20-17 lead. The Raiders finished the set on a 10-5 run including three kills from freshman Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) who lead Mount Union on the night with 15 kills.

The second set Westminster jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Mount Union regained the lead (9-7) from a hitting error by Westminster and a kill from sophomore Isabella Sprunger (North Royalton) who was second on the night in kills with eight. The Raiders finished out the set winning 25-19.

The final set of the night Mount Union scored the first seven points of the set and finished the set winning 25-17.
 
Junior setters Mollie Thomas (Massillon / Massillon Perry) and Katie May (Brecksville / Independence) had 18 and 15 assists on the night.
 
Defensively the Raiders had three individuals pick up double digit digs with junior Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) having 21, Thomas picking up 17 and Bartell with 12.
 
Freshman Catherine Klopp (Sycamore / Mohawk) finished with six blocks on the night.
 
Mount Union continues play in Pittsburgh Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Susquehanna and a 5 p.m. match against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
