ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union Women's Volleyball team swept Muskingum with scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23 Wednesday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (17-5, 4-2 OAC) were led on the offensive end by sophomore
Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) with 14 kills.
Seniors
Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) and
Isabella Sprunger (North Royalton) finished with 11 and nine kills respectively.
Senior setters
Mollie Thomas (Massillon / Massillon Perry) and
Katie May (Brecksville / Independence) kept the offense flowing with 20 and 17 assists.
Sophomore
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) finished with a game-high 18 digs while senior
Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) and Thomas had double digit digs with 15 and 13.
Sophomore middle hitters
Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) and
Catherine Klopp (Sycamore / Mohawk) had four and three blocks in the game.
Muskingum (14-6, 3-3 OAC) were led by 12 kills from Khloe Taylor, 29 assists to Emma Conrad and 14 digs from Gracie Collins.
In the first set Mount Union and Muskingum had ties at points one through four until two kills from Sprunger got two straight kills. Mount Union pushed the lead out to 13-9 after a 6-2 run fueled by two kills from Klopp. Muskingum got within two four different times, but the Raiders responded every time including a 5-2 run to end the game finished by two kills from Meyer.
Set two the Raiders jumped out to a 11-2 lead including a 10-0 run that had four kills from Leininger and two service aces from Bartell. Muskingum got within five at 16-11 but a 6-0 run from Mount Union pushed the lead back out to double digits as Mount Union finished off the set winning 25-16.
Set three went back to the back and forth battle between the two teams as there were six different lead changes and nine different ties. Mount Union used an 11-5 run to come back from an 18-14 deficit in the set taking it 25-23.
Mount Union will head on the road for a tri match with Wilmington at noon for OAC play and Mount St. Joseph at 2 p.m. on Saturday with both games being played in Wilmington.
