Men's Basketball: No. 6 Raiders Roll Against Ohio Northern

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 6 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team beat Ohio Northern 89-71 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (7-1, 2-1 OAC) had three players score in double figures, with senior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) leading the way with a game-high 21 points. Senior Jeffery Mansfield (Wilmington) and junior Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) each added 13 points to round out Mount Union's double-digit scorers.

The Polar Bears (4-4, 1-2 OAC) were led by Landen Long who scored a team high 18 points.

After trading baskets over the first three minutes of the game a three-pointer by senior Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) sparked a 15-0 run over the next 3:14 to give the Raiders a 22-6 lead with 14:05 remaining in the half. Ohio Northern would cut the lead down to 11 with 9:20 remaining in the half. Mount Union would then go on a 16-6 run over the next 6:51 to stretch their lead to 21 with 2:29 to play in the half. The Polar Bears would close the half on a 7-2 run, giving the Raiders a 47-31 lead heading into the break.

Ohio Northern would open the second half with a 13-6 run to cut the lead down to nine with 16:11 remaining in the game, but that is as close as they would get as Mount Union would respond with a 21-6 run over the next 7:36 to take a 74-50 lead with just over eight minutes to play and would go on to win 89-71.

The Raiders are home again next when they host Wilmington on Saturday, December 17 at 2 p.m. for an OAC matchup in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
