TIFFIN, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team picked up its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season defeating Heidelberg 80-46 Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (4-3, 1-0 OAC) were led by seniors
Gretchen Koken (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) and
Emma Cannon (Dalton). Koken had a game-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double while Cannon scored 13 points.
Mount Union had three more scorers in the double digits being sophomore
Ali Hudik (Mentor / Lake Catholic),
Hailey Haywood (Barberton) and freshman
Sierra Schlosser (Galloway / Bishop Ready) all scoring 10 points.
Heidelberg (1-5, 0-2 OAC) was led by Hallie Rogers scoring 10 points.
Mount Union got the game going scoring the first five points with a Koken jumper and a Hudik three-pointer. Heidelberg responded with a 5-0 run in the middle of the quarter taking an 8-7 lead with 5:58 left in the quarter. Mount Union outscored Heidelberg 7-2 over the final 3:27 of the quarter to take a 14-10 lead.
The Raiders took control of the game in the second quarter starting a 9-2 run with Koken scoring five of the points in the run. Heidelberg got within six three separate times in the quarter but a three from Schlosser and Koken along with two free throws from freshman
Bailey Shutsa (Wadsworth / Norton) pushed the lead out to 38-23 until Heidelberg got two free throws to end the quarter.
In the third quarter Heidelberg got within seven with 4:33 remaining in the quarter. Mount Union finished the quarter out on a 18-2 to take a commanding 59-36 lead into the final quarter. Mount Union finished the final quarter outscoring Heidelberg 21-10 to take the 80-46 victory.
The Raiders continue OAC play on the road heading to University Heights on Wednesday, December 7 for a 7 p.m. tip off against John Carroll.
