Purple Raiders Almost Complete Comeback Against John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team was defeated by John Carroll 64-63 Wednesday night at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
 
The Purple Raiders (4-4, 1-1 OAC) were led by a career-high 21 points from sophomore Ali Hudik (Mentor / Lake Catholic). Sophomore Hailey Haywood (Barberton) recorded double digits with 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
John Carroll (5-1, 2-0 OAC) was led by two double-doubles with Kaelyn Underwood with 21 points 11 rebounds and Maddie Pietrowski with 15 points and 10 rebounds..
 
Mount Union got the game going with an 8-2 run with a three from Hudik and Freshman Audrey Livesay (Akron / Revere) and a layup from senior Gretchen Koken (Harmony Pa. / Seneca Valley). John Carroll used a 6-0 run to tie the game up but another Raider three from got another Mount Union lead. Five quick points from Hudik along with a bucket from freshman Mckayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) pushed the lead out to 20-12. Both teams would exchange buckets toward the end of the quarter as Mount Union led 25-18.
 
A 7-1 run for John Carroll to start the quarter had Mount Union leading 26-25. Mount Union got a three from freshman Halle Ignacio (Canton / Massillon Jackson) to take a 29-25 lead. The Raiders extended their lead to 34-27 with a Hudik three and a Dunkle layup. John Carroll finished the quarter on a 8-3 run as Mount Union took a 37-35 lead into the half.
 
The third quarter saw a defensive battle with Mount Union holding John Carroll to 15 points but John Carroll held Mount Union to just six points as John Carroll took a 50-43 lead into the final quarter.
 
Mount Union began the fourth quarter on an 8-4 run to get within three but John Carroll pushed it out to a 63-51 lead. Mount Union then went on a 12-0 run with 2:30 remaining in the quarter to tie the game at 63 with 14 seconds left. A free throw made by John Carroll with four seconds and a missed three from Cannon was the difference over the final four seconds.
 
Mount Union returns home to take on Ohio Northern on Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip-off.
