ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's volleyball team lost their home opener to Penn State-Behrend (Pa.) in three sets, 25-27, 20-25 and 25-27.
The Purple Raiders (1-7) were led by senior
Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington) who had 12 kills on the night and junior
Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) who added 11 kills.
Freshman
Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) led the Raiders with 20 assists, while senior
Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) had 10 digs.
The first set saw the Lions jump out to a 6-2 lead; the Raiders would answer with a 10-5 run of their own to take a 12-11 lead. Mount Union and Penn State-Behrend would go back and forth over the next several points until the Lions went on a 6-3 to take a 23-18 lead. The Raiders would answer with a 6-1 run to tie it up at 24 before Penn State-Behrend would take three of the final four points to take set one 27-25.
Set two saw 11 ties and four lead changes. After a back and forth start to the set, Penn State-Behrend would go on a 7-2 run to take 15-12 lead. Mount Union would answer though, going on a 6-3 run of their own to tie the set at 18. The Lions would then go on a 7-2 run to take set two 25-20.
The third set had 10 ties and four lead changes. The Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the set. But Mount Union would answer with a 6-2 run to take a 6-5 lead. The Raiders and Lions would go back and forth over the next several points until Mount Union went on a 6-2 run to take a 21-17 lead. Penn State-Behrend would answer going on a 10-4 run to take the set 27-25.
The Raiders are home again next as they take on Olivet (Mich.) at 1 p.m. and then Adrian (Mich.) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 19 in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
