Raiders Start MCVL Play With Two Wins

ALLIANCE, Ohio. – Mount Union Men's Volleyball team opened up conference play winning two matches against Olivet (Mich.) and Adrian (Mich.) Saturday afternoon.
 
In the first match the Purple Raiders (3-7, 2-0 MVCL) beat Olivet (Mich.) (4-8, 0-1 MVCL) 25-17, 25-12 and 25-21.
 
Leading Mount Union was junior outside hitter Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) who finished with 13 kills.
 
Senior Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Hoban) and freshman Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) had 23 and 18 assists.
 
Senior libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) and Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) led the team with 14 and eight digs.
 
The Raiders hit a season high .424 hitting percentage including a .762 hitting percentage in the second set.
 
The second game Mount Union defeated Adrian (Mich.) (3-13, 0-2 MVCL) 31-29, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25 and 15-13.
 
Leading the Raiders in the game was senior Sam Matonis (Macedonia / Walsh Jesuit) with 13 kills while Ternent had 11 and senior Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington) had 10.
 
Leyden finished the game with 29 assists with Heeney having double-digits with 11.
 
Grenier had a team-high 12 digs with junior Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) picking up four blocks.
 
Mount Union heads to Hiram, Ohio on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. to take on Hiram.
