Raiders Balance Attack Leads To Four Set Victory

HIRAM, Ohio – Mount Union's men's volleyball team defeated Hiram College in four sets 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 28-26 on Wednesday night.
 
The Purple Raiders (4-7, 2-0 MCVL) had four men in double-digit kills led by junior Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) with 12 kills.
 
Junior Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) finished with 11 kills, junior Luke Trzeciak (Cranberry, Pa. / Seneca Valley) and senior Sam Matonis (Macedonia / Walsh Jesuit) finished with 10 kills each.
 
Senior Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Hoban) had a team-high 32 assists with freshaman Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) finished with 13 assists.
 
Ternent also led Mount Union with a game-high 16 assists while senior Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) finished with 15.
 
The first set saw neither team get a lead larger than three with Hiram having a 21-18 lead. Mount Union got within one at 24-23 but fell as Hiram finished the set with a kill.
 
The second set the Raiders got a 9-4 run to get out to a 17-10 lead. Hiram got within four points once with the score being 24-20 as a Matonis kill gave Mount Union a 25-20 set two win.
 
The third set was similar for Mount Union as it used a 11-4 run to jump out to a 19-10 lead. The Raiders kept that advantage the rest of the set as Hiram had two errors in the final three points as Mount Union won set 3 25-15.
 
Hiram raced out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set with Mount Union responding with a 10-5 run to take a 12-10 lead. Hiram then led later in the set 22-19. Mount Union finished the set off on a 9-4 run taking the set 28-26 and winning the match.
 
The Raiders return to MCVL play taking on Mount St. Joseph on Friday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Cincinnati.
