Raiders Sweep Wilmington on Senior Day

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning game one 4-1 and winning game two 14-4 in five innings.

The Purple Raiders (15-16-1, 5-6-1 OAC) struck first in game one scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first run came after senior Hanna Ingram (Stow) hit an RBI single that scored senior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley). The second run came off a sacrifice bunt from freshman Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) that scored senior Alyssa Rose (Madison).

The Quakers (11-11, 5-7 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, coming off an RBI single from Lizz Hadley to cut the Raider lead to 2-1. Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs, the first came from an RBI single by junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) that scored senior Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas). The second run came off a sacrifice fly by Guspyt that scored Heath, the Raiders would go on to win 4-1.

Rose got the start in the circle for Mount Union giving up just one run on five hits and striking out five in six innings. Senior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) picked up the save for the Raiders giving up zero runs on zero hits in the final inning.

Wilmington would strike first in game two scoring off an RBI from Hadley in the top of the first. The Quakers would add three more runs in the top of the second, scoring off RBIs from Mollie Moore, Lindsey Carter and Hayley Suchland to take a 4-0 lead.

Mount Union would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second, the first two came off a two RBI triple from Sherban and then Heath hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Sherban to cut the Quaker lead down to 4-3.

The Raiders would claim their first lead of the game in the bottom of third inning when they scored four more runs, the first run came from an RBI from sophomore Michaela Folks (Wooster), then senior Natalie Martin (Millersburg / West Holmes) hit a two RBI double that brought in Folks and Bish. The final run of the inning came from an RBI single from Sherban that scored Martin and gave Mount Union a 7-4 lead.

Mount Union would add to their lead in the fourth inning scoring seven runs with RBIs coming from Bish, Folks, Martin, Heath and Guspyt and would go on to win game two 14-4 in five innings.

Senior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) started in the circle for the Raiders and gave up four runs, three earned on six hits and struck out two in two innings. Senior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) would come in to pitch the final three innings and gave up zero runs on just one hit and struck out one.

The Raiders return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they host Marietta in an OAC doubleheader, with game one beginning at 3 p.m. and game two following at 5 p.m. in Alliance.
