HOLLAND, Michigan – Mount Union's women's lacrosse team picked up a 17-14 victory over Hope Saturday afternoon at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Purple Raiders (6-2, 2-0 OAC) were led on offense by senior
Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif.) who each scored a game-high five goals and sophomore
Katie Clark (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) tied a career-high in points and assists with six assists and three goals for a game-high nine points.
Junior
Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) scored three goals,
Madi Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) and
Sam Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) scored two goals while
Emily Funk (Strongsville) and
Ashley Carr (Livonia, N.Y. / Livonia) scored one each.
Molly McGinnis (Brunswick) played all 60 minutes making six saves for the Raiders.
Hope (5-4) was paced by Ruthie Anderson, Kristen Szost, Madison Micho and Molly Frederickson each scored three goals.
Bates got Mount Union on the board first with the third fastest goal in school history scoring in just 10 seconds. Hope responded with three goals of its own in a 2:30 period for a 3-1 lead less than four minutes into play.
The Raiders grabbed two more goals as S. Karr and Clark both scored one and Hope got one more before the end of the period to have a 4-3 lead over Mount Union.
Bates got Mount Union on the board in the second quarter this time scoring in 37 seconds to tie the game. Hope responded with a goal to take the lead but a goal from M. Karr and S. Karr in less than 15 second gave Mount Union a 6-5 lead.
Hope responded with four straight goals in the second quarter to take a 9-6 lead, but Bumbarger picked up two goals with the last one three seconds before half to get Mount Union within one at the halftime break.
Bumbarger came out in the third quarter scoring for the Raiders to tie the game at nine. Once again Hope went on a 4-0 run to push the lead out to 13-9. Mount Union responded with four goals in a 1:48 period with a goal from Funk, M. Karr, Bumbarger and Bates. Hope got a goal with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter to take a 14-13 lead into the final quarter.
Mount Union held Hope scoreless over the final quarter while Clark got two goals with Carr and Bumbarger scoring a goal each.
Mount Union will stay in Michigan taking on Kalamazoo (Mich.) tomorrow Sunday, April 3 at 11 a.m.
