Fourth Quarter Run Comes Up Short for the Purple Raiders

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball lost 66-58 against the Muskingum Fighting Muskies in the Timken Gymnasium for an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown Wednesday night.

The Purple Raiders (5-11, 2-7 OAC) were led by seniors Gretchen Koken (Harmony/Seneca Valley) with 15 points and Emma Cannon (Dalton) finished the game with 10 points.

Muskingum (5-11, 2-7 OAC) was lead by Caitlyn DeMassimo with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

The Muskies came out of the first quarter with two quick baskets and then later a 9-0 run beginning in the eight-minute mark sparked by C. DeMassimo. Koken and sophomore Hailey Haywood (Barberton) would give the Raiders two points each to close out the first quarter as Mount Union trailed 16-8.

Canon would go on to score the Raiders' first four points to open the second quarter. The Muskies would capitalize on this as they would go on another 9-0 run at the 8:32 minute mark to lead 26-10. Junior Lily Sweeney (Sylvania/Sylvania Northview) would hit the Purple Raiders' only three-pointer of the quarter as Mount Union trailed 30-18.

In the third quarter, sophomore Dae Dae Nash (Akron/Buchtel), Canon, and others would help put points on the board for Mount Union, but the Muskies remained hot as they scored five baskets from behind the three-point line.

The Purple Raiders opened the fourth and final quarter on a 12-3 run, hoping to cut down on the lead. The Muskies would then answer with their own run as they scored seven straight points. The Purple Raiders scoring streak at 11-0 would come up short as the quarter came to an end.

Mount Union's next matchup is home against Heidelberg on Saturday January 21st at 4 p.m.
