ADA, Ohio – The No. 3 Mount Union men's basketball team won, 73-66, at Ohio Northern in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (17-2, 10-2 OAC) overcame a seven-point deficit in the first half and surmounted a double-digit lead midway through the second half for their ninth-straight win over the Polar Bears (9-10, 5-7 OAC).
Three Raiders scored in double-digits, led by freshman
Corey Hudson (Columbus / Pickerington) who registered a career-high 17 points - to go along with a team-high four assists. Graduate students
Braedon Poole (McDonald / McDonald) and
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg / Twinsburg) followed with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Senior
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) added eight points, while junior
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) had seven. Graduate student
Logan Hill (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) led Mount on the glass with a season-high seven rebounds, while Parker had six.
Ohio Northern led by as much as seven points (26-19) when Landen Long made a jumper with 6:30 remaining in the first half. Mount Union battled back and ended the half on a 16-8 run, capped off with a buzzer-beating three-pointer by junior
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) to put the Purple Raiders up 34-33 at intermission.
In the second half, Mount continued its momentum and took its first double-digit lead when Hill made a layup with 11:45 to go and never looked back. The Polar Bears got within five points (69-64) with 27 seconds left, however, the Raiders held them at bay for the win.
Mount is back on the court Wednesday, Feb. 1 at home against Baldwin Wallace with a 7 p.m. tip.
