BEAVER FALLS, Pennsylvania – The Mount Union men's volleyball team, who are receiving votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 15 Poll, swept Geneva, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19 on Tuesday night.
The Purple Raiders (5-1) were led on offense by senior
Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) with 12 kills. Junior
Jack McClure (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) finished the night with a double-double having 10 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore
Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) finished with a season high 41 assists while sophomore
Aaron Armour (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) tied a game-high with 10 digs.
Geneva (3-6) was led by Byron Spear with 11 kills, Curtis Thomas with 15 assists and Paul Peachey with eight digs.
Set one saw Mount Union get out to a 5-1 lead early on but Geneva responded with a 7-4 run to trail by just one. Mount Union pushed its lead out to 16-10 in the set but once again Geneva closed the lead getting as close as three twice, but the Raiders were able to pull away winning the set 25-21. Mount Union had 13 kills in the set with just five errors while Geneva had just one less kill and the same amount of errors.
In the second set neither team got a lead larger than three until Mount Union lead 13-9. The Raiders got a lead as large as five leading 16-11 with Geneva responding with a 5-0 run to tie the game up. The score was tied twice at point 18 and 19 but a 6-1 run to end the set went in favor of Mount Union. This set saw Mount Union hit a blistering .467 with 18 kills and four errors on just 30 attempts while Geneva hit .308 with 12 kills and four errors on 26 attempts.
The final set Mount Union and Geneva were tied at 4 but a 15-4 run from the Raiders pushed the lead out to 19-8 which saw Geneva not get closer than five points as Mount Union took the victory 25-19. Mount Union kept its hot hitting with 16 kills and three errors on 30 attempts for .433 hitting percentage while Geneva had 12 kills and five errors.
Mount Union hit .372 for the whole game with 47 kills and just 12 errors while Geneva hit .234 with 36 kills and 14 errors.
The Raiders now head to Mequon, Wis. with a match against No. 10-natioanlly ranked UC Santa Cruz on Friday, February 3rd at 6 pm. Mount Union then will take on MSOE and the host Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday with games at 1 pm and 3 pm.
