Men's Volleyball: Raiders Take Down No. 10 UC Santa Cruz In Thrilling Five Set Match

MEQUON, Wisconsin – The Mount Union men's volleyball team, reciving votes in the AVCA Top 15 Poll, took down No. 10 nationally ranked UC Santa Cruz in five sets, 25-22, 21-25, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-10, Friday Night at R. John Bucck Fieldhouse.
 
The Purple Raiders (6-1) get their first Top 15 win in school history.
 
The Raiders were led on offense by Junior Jack McClure (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) with a career night with 24 kills and seven digs.
 
Senior Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) finished the night with a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
 
Sophomore Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) finished with a career-high 55 assists while sophomore Aaron Armour (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) had a game and career high 16 digs.
 
Seniors Luke Trzeciak (Cranberry, Pa. / Seneca Valley) and Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) led the blocking attack with five assisted blocks while freshman Michael Bowler (Broadview Heights / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) finished with two solo and two assisted.
 
UC Santa Cruz (8-3) was led by Zachary Thompson with 16 kills, Tennessee Fulks with 28 assists and Max Mednick with 15 digs.
 
In the game there was 37 tied scores with 13 different lead changes in the five sets. Mount Union had one last kill 65-64 but was far more efficient with just 19 errors while Santa Cruz had 27. Mount Union finished the match with nine kills to just five from Santa Cruz.
 
The Raiders will now take on MSOE and the host Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday with games at 1 pm and 3 pm.
