SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Scranton 80-76 in overtime in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.
The Purple Raiders (3-0) had three players score in double figures with senior
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with a 33-point, 13-rebound double-double. Senior
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) and sophomore
Corey Hudson (Columbus / Pickerington) rounded out the Raiders in double digits, scoring 14 and 11 respectively.
The Royals (1-2) were led by Jon Spatola who scored a team-high 17 points and then Will McLoughlin, Cameron Khoza and EJ Matthews each scored 15 points.
With back-to-back three pointers with just over 16 minutes remaining in the first half Gurley became the new school record holder for career three-pointers made at Mount Union, he has made 263 threes in his career breaking the previous record of 262.
Those threes would give the Raiders a 9-4 lead with 16:12 to play in the first half, Mount Union would hold that lead until a 9-0 run from Scranton over 3:21 of game time saw them take a 19-15 lead with nine and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Both teams would trade baskets over the next couple minutes until a lay in by Parker sparked a quick 9-2 run over the next 2:50 that saw Mount Union take a 36-32 lead with just under three minutes to go in the first half. The Royals would score the final five points of the half to take a one-point 37-36 lead into the halftime break.
Scranton would stretch their lead to eight over the first three minutes of the second half before three straight baskets from Parker sparked a 10-4 run over the next 4:47 that cut the lead down to two with 12:21 left to play in the game. The Royals would maintain a slim lead over the next four and a half minutes before a 7-0 Mount Union run saw the Raiders reclaim the lead with 5:29 remaining in the game. The Raiders and Royals would then go back and forth over the final five minutes of the game and head to overtime tied at 68.
Mount Union would open the overtime period with a 7-1 run over the first 1:45 to take a 75-69 lead with just over two minutes to play. However, Scranton would answer and back-to-back baskets from Khoza would cut the lead to one with 14 second left in overtime, but free throws from Hudson and Parker would ice the game as the Raiders would go on to win 80-76.
The Raiders return home next when they host Pitt-Greensburg in their home opener on Saturday, November 18 at 5 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
