ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball defeated Wooster 75-51 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (5-0) had three players score in double figures with sophomore
Dante Collier (Columbus / Licking Heights) leading the way with a career and game-high 23 points. Seniors
Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) and
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) rounded out the Raiders in double figures with 18 and 12 respectively.
The Fighting Scots (1-4) were led by JJ Cline who scored a team-high 10 points.
Wooster jumped out to a 14-9 lead just over six minutes into the game, until back-to-back threes from Gurley and freshman
Jahlil Graham (Canton / McKinley) sparked a 15-4 run over the next 5:24 that saw Mount Union take a 24-18 lead with 8:03 to play in the first half. Both teams would go on to trade baskets over the next seven minutes before back-to-back threes from Newsom and Collier to end the half saw the Raiders take a 36-27 lead into the halftime break.
Mount Union would open the second half on an 11-4 run to push their lead to 16 with 15:31 remaining in the game. The Raiders would continue to extend their lead over the final 15 minutes of action, the largest it would get was 30 and they would go on to win 75-51.
The Raiders are home again next when they host Wilmington in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, December 2 at 2 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
