Men's Basketball: No. 4 Raiders Drop OAC Opener to Wilmington

ALLIANCE, Ohio The No. 4 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup 79-80 to Wilmington on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (5-1, 0-1 OAC) had three players score in double figures, with senior Christian Parker leading the way with a team-high 18 points. Senior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) added in 17 points and sophomore Caleb Laurich (Akron / Copley) rounded out the Raiders in double digits with an 11-point, 10-rebound double double.

The Quakers (5-3, 1-0 OAC) were led by Domenic Farley who scored a game-high 24 points and Jayden Lewis who scored 11 points. 

The Quakers jumped out to a 26-17 lead just over eight minutes into the game, the Raiders would respond with a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead down to three. Wilmington would maintain their lead over the next several minutes until Parker found junior Marcus Steele (Solon) to tie the game at 40. The Quakers would then stretch their lead back out to four before a lay in by Laurich would cut the lead to two. Then, with two seconds left in the half Farley hit a three pointer to give Wilmington a five-point 49-44 lead heading into the halftime break. 

The Quakers would stretch their lead to nine to open the second half, before Mount Union responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 53. After trading baskets over the next couple minutes, the Raiders would go on a 12-5 run over the next 4:33 of game time to take a 65-61 lead with 10:34 remaining in the game. Both teams would go back and fourth over the next nine minutes of game time before the Quakers scored the final six points of the game over the last 1:36, including the game winner by Lewis with just five seconds to take the 80-79 win. 

The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to New Concord for an OAC matchup with Muskingum on Wednesday, December 6 at 7 p.m.
