Raiders Go 2-0 In West Virginia Trip Thanks To Bates Golden Goal

CHARLESTON, West Virginia—Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) scored the golden goal as Mount Union's women's lacrosse team defeated Charleston 13-12 in overtime Saturday morning.
 
The Purple Raiders (2-0) were led by Bates who had a team-high four goals. Madi Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) and Mackenzie Kolstad (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Senior) each had two goals and two assists.
 
Sam Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) scored three goals and Katie Clark (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) had two assists with a goal.
 
Abby Lindkvist (Greenlawn, N.Y. / Harborfields) was in goal making nine saves while Leah Shutts (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central) led the team in ground balls with six and caused turnovers with four.
 
Charleston (0-3) was led by a game-high five goals from Tess Yuhas.
 
The game started with a back-and-forth battle as the teams were tied at 3 and 5 after the first and second quarter.
 
Charleston outscored Mount Union 5-1 in the third period and took a 10-6 lead into the final quarter.
 
Mount Union then responded with five straight goals to take a 11-10 lead with 5:16 remaining. Charleston then responded with a goal with 2:42 but Sam Karr found the back of the net with 2:03 remaining. Charleston tied the game up with 1:16 as both teams had shots at the end of the quarter, but neither could convert. The Raiders then found the back of the net with a goal from Bates to take the victory.
 
Mount Union now has its home opener on Thursday, March 2nd at 7 p.m. against Hope College.
