AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mount Union baseball team split its doubleheader on Monday during its Florida trip.
The Purple Raiders won, 14-4, over Penn State Abington in game one and lost, 8-1, to Aurora in game two.
Down 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning in game one, Mount Union (7-1) scored three runs to takes its first lead of the game and led the rest of the way including scoring eight runs in the eighth to enforce the 10-run rule. Four Raiders had two RBIs each: junior
Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), senior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic), senior
Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls), and sophomore
Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark). Mazza's two-run single in the fourth put the Raiders in front, 5-3. First-year
Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) earned his second win of the season, after throwing seven innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts.
In game two, Mount cut Aurora's lead in half and was only down 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Aurora pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and two in the eighth.
Mount is back in action Thursday, March 9 with a doubleheader vs. Saint Joseph's with the first game starting at 9 a.m.
