BEXLEY, Ohio—The Mount Union women's lacrosse team defeated Capital 19-14 ending a 12-game conference win streak for Capital Saturday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
The Purple Raiders (7-1, 3-0 OAC) were the last team that defeated Capital in the conference which came in the OAC semifinals in 2021.
Mount Union was led by an eight-point day from
Katie Clark (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) scoring five goals and having three assists.
Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn.) and
Eden Kesler (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) finished the day both with four goals as Bates also added an assist.
Emily Nannarone (Stow / Stow Munore-Falls) and
Sam Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) had three and two goals each while defended
Leah Shutts (Buffalo, N.Y. / Amherst Central) scored a goal and had an assist.
Kesler led the team in ground balls with five while
Mackenzie Kolstad (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Senior) had four and led Mount Union with three caused turnovers.
Abby Lindkvist (Greenlawn, N.Y. / Harborfields) was in goal all 60 minutes making seven saves.
Capital (4-4, 2-1 OAC) was led by Grace Osborn with eight goals and one assist while Capital split goalie duties with both combining for five saves.
Mount Union got on the board with the first three goals as Kesler, Clark and Shutts scoring all together in a 1:13 stretch. Capital responded with two goals in a 48 second span but a goal from Nannarone and Kesler gave Mount Union a 5-3 lead. Capital finished the quarter on a 3-0 run to tie the game at five after one quarter.
The second quarter saw a goal from Nannarone and Clark to give Mount Union a 7-5 lead. Capital came back to tie it up at seven but 16 seconds later Mount Union regained the lead with a goal from Kesler. S. Karr got another Raider goal to lead 9-7. Capital would get a goal but once again Kesler responded with a goal just 15 seconds after this time and Clark picked up a goal to lead 11-8. Capital finished the half off with a goal as Mount Union led 11-9.
Mount Union got another 2-0 run to start the third quarter to lead 13-9 as Clark and S. Karr scored. Capital got its largest scoring run with four straight to tie the game at 13. A goal from Bates and then Capital looked to take the game into the fourth quarter tied but a goal with 26 seconds left from Nannarone gave Mount Union a 15-14 lead.
Mount Union proceeded to score four goals three from Bates and a goal from Clark while shutting down Capital allowing zero goals.
Mount Union will have a quick turnaround as they take on Ohio Wesleyan at home on Monday April 3rd at 5 p.m.
