Softball: Raiders Sweep Ohio Wesleyan; Gerback Hits Walk Off Double in Game One

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening, winning game one 3-2 and winning game two 9-5 in six innings.

The Purple Raiders (19-5) struck first in game one in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) hit an RBI triple that scored sophomore Adri George (Eastlake / North) and then senior Alexis Temple (Mentor) scored on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.

The Battling Bishops (8-14) would cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Sophia Cegledy hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1. Ohio Wesleyan would come back to tie the game in the sixth inning scoring off an RBI single from Sophie Loehner.

In the bottom of the seventh inning senior Taylor Gerback (Louisville / Marlington) hit a walk-off RBI double that scored freshman Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights) to give the Raiders a 3-2 victory in game one.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched all seven innings, giving up just two runs on 10 hits and striking out seven in the win.

The Raiders would strike first again in game two, scoring in the bottom half of the first when freshman Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover). Mount Union would extend their lead in the second inning scoring three runs, the first two coming off RBIs from freshmen Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa. / Reynolds) and Lydia Brunner (Minerva) and the third run coming off an inside the park homerun from senior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bishops would cut into the lead in the top of the third when Rylie Moore hit a three RBI double to cut the lead down to one run. The Raiders would extend their lead in the third inning, scoring off an RBI single from Gerback and then would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth with RBIs coming from Heath, Mercer and Gerback to make the lead 8-3. Junior Michaela Folks (Wooster) hit a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Brooklyn Schlabach (Sugar Creek / Waynedale) to extend the lead to 9-3.

Ohio Wesleyan would cut into the lead again in the sixth inning with a pair off runs, coming off RBIs from Sophia Holupka and Kaelyn Rodriguez to cut the lead to 9-5. However, after the sixth inning the game was called due to darkness as the Raiders would go on to win 9-5.

Herman got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up three runs, zero earned on three hits in four innings of work. Schlabach would come in to pitch the final two innings in relief and gave up two runs, one earned on four hits and struck out one.

The Raiders hit the road next as they travel to Berea for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, April 12 with game one beginning at 3 p.m. and game two beginning at 5 p.m.
