Baseball: Mount Sweeps Capital, Sealed by Complete-Game Victory by Fornara

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team swept Capital in a home Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 15.

The Purple Raiders put on an offensive clinic in game one, winning 16-3, led by senior Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls) with a career-high six RBIs. Mount sealed the sweep after another dominant performance by first-year pitcher Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) for a 7-1 victory in game two.

Mount Union (18-9, 6-4 OAC) was in control from the start in game one, including an 8-0 lead after three innings. The Purple Raiders finished strong with four runs in each the seventh and eighth innings. As mentioned, Schilling led the offensive attack with a career-high six RBIs, including a two-run home run in the first inning and a two-run double in the second. Schilling now leads Mount with four homers on the season. Classmate Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) had a two-run double of his own, totaling four RBIs in the game (tying a career-best). Senior Anthony Kemer (Cleveland, Ohio / Lakewood St. Edward) registered his third long ball of season, once again following an incredible defensive play in the previous half inning – saving runs with a diving catch in left field. Raider junior pitcher Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) improved to 4-1 on the year, only allowing three runs off four hits, while striking out four, in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Raiders pulled away with six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single down the right field line by Kemer. Fornara improved to a team-best 5-1 on the year, pitching a one-run complete game – the first complete game of his collegiate career. Fornara only gave up three hits through eight innings (five total) and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts.

The Raiders are back on the field Sunday, April 16 at home against Washington and Jefferson in a non-conference nine-inning game. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
