UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team split at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Wednesday.
Mount Union (19-11, 7-5 OAC) won game one, 7-2, and lost game two, 4-0.
In the first game, the Purple Raiders led 2-0 after eight innings of play, before senior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) sealed the win with a grand slam in the ninth, his second homer of the game and team-leading fifth of the season. Mazza's first homer broke the school record for career home runs, surpassing Greg Ferrell's (2008-2011) mark of 25. Junior pitcher
Chuck Hawley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) improved to 2-0 on the season, after coming in for relief throwing five innings and only allowing two runs off five hits, while striking out two. Juniors
Andrew Mekeal (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) and
Joey Procop (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) each added an RBI for Mount.
In the nightcap, John Carroll (20-10, 8-4 OAC) scored one run in the first, one in the second, and two in the fifth. The Raiders left five runners on base. Sophomore
Chris Phillips (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) (1-5) got the loss, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs off seven hits, while striking out three.
The Raiders are back on the field Saturday, April 22 with a home doubleheader against Wilmington. First game is set for 1 p.m.
