ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning game one 4-0 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (17-5, 4-2 OAC) and the Cardinals (8-9-1, 2-2 OAC) were tied at zero heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and the sophomore
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit a two-run homerun to left field to give Mount Union a 2-0 lead. Then freshman
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) hit a two RBI double that scored junior
Lydia Wacker (Wellington / Black River) and sophomore
Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights) to extend the lead to 4-0. Otterbein wouldn't be able to answer in the seventh inning and the Raiders would go on to win 4-0.
Freshman
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) pitched a complete game shutout for Mount Union, giving up just three hits and striking out six.
The Raiders would strike first in game two when senior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) hit an RBI single that scored Swartz to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the fourth inning when senior
Alexis Temple (Mentor) hit a two RBI single that scored freshmen
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) and
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard), then Heath stole home and Temple scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 5-0. The Raiders would add three more runs to their lead in the bottom half of the fifth, the first two coming off a two RBI single from Heath and then freshman
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit an RBI single to score Heath, as the Raiders would go on to win 8-0 in five innings.
Freshman
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and gave up zero runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of action. Cahill would come in to pitch the final 1.2 innings in relief giving up zero runs on zero hits and striking out one.
The Raiders are home again next for a non-conference doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 11 with game one starting at 3:30 p.m. and game two starting at 5:30 p.m. in Alliance.
