BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Mount Union's men's soccer team beat Geneva 5-0 in their season opener on Friday evening.
The Purple Raiders (1-0) got off to a fast start when senior
Carter Hancock (Amherst / Marion L. Steele) was able to find senior
Omar Najjar (Akron / Revere) for a goal in the fifth minute. Mount Union would add to their lead in the 31
st minute this time off the foot of junior
Kabiona Ramadhani (Cleveland / Lincoln West) with senior
Jamon McCort (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) picking up the assist, then the Raiders would find the back of the net again just under four minutes later when freshman
Alex Depperschmidt (Mansfield / Lexington) connected with junior
Crofton McDevitt (Reynoldsburg) to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Sophomore
AJ Jaber (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) would score his first career goal off an assist from Najjar in the 52
nd minute to stretch the Mount Union lead to 4-0. Then, freshman
Dom Kustura (Willowick / Eastlake North) capped off the 5-0 victory by scoring his first career goal off a penalty kick in the 67
th minute.
Freshman
Jackson Callender (Cleveland Heights / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) picked up his first career shutout in his first career start, as the Raider defense held the Golden Tornados (0-1) to just four shots.
The Raiders are on the road again tomorrow as they head to Grove City, Pa. to take on Grove City at 6 p.m.
