Women's Volleyball: Hot Hitting Gives Raiders Their 10th Straight Win

BALTIMORE, Maryland—The Mount Union women's volleyball team won its 10th straight match including its fourth straight sweep defeating Scranton (Pa) 25-16, 25-22 and 25-21 Friday afternoon at John Hopkins University.
 
The Purple Raiders (10-2) were led by a trio in juniors Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Acedmy) 11 kills, Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) 11 kills and freshman Riley Meister (Madison) 10 kills with each girl hitting over .417%.
 
Freshman Melissa Hansen (Hudson) and junior Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) had double digit assists with 21 and 14. Junior Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) finished the game with eight blocks while freshman Libero (Averi Haley) finished with a team-high 14 digs.
 
Scranton (3-6) was led by Deanna Whelpley with 15 kills, Gianna Detorie with 19 assists and Maddie Forry with 20 digs.
 
The first set the Raiders handled business as they jumped out to leads of 7-4, 10-5 and 17-7. Mount Union used a 6-1 run to take a 24-14 lead and finished the set off with a kill from Meister. Mount Union had 12 kills with just three errors in the set while Scranton had 12 kills and eight errors.
 
The second set saw Scranton jump out to a 5-0 lead. Mount Union battled back with a 6-1 run which saw two kills from Bartell to take a 9-8. Scranton took a quick lead at 10-9 but two kills from Leininger and Meister along with a kill from Meyer pushed the lead out to 16-10. Scranton got within two at 24-22 but a hitting error from Scranton ended the set. Mount Union had 13 kills in the set with four errors with Scranton having 12 kills and seven errors.
 
The final set of the day had 11 different ties and four lead changes with the final lead change coming as Mount Union went on a 7-0 run to take a 23-17 lead. Mount Union finished off the set with a kill from Meyer. Mount Union had 15 kills with just two errors and Scranton had 16 kills with six errors.
 
Mount Union will remain in Baltimore for tomorrow's games against Salisbury and No. 8 Nationally ranked Johns Hopkins at 10 am and 12:30 pm.
