Women's Volleyball: A Dozen Straight!; Raiders Upset No. 8 Johns Hopkins in 12th Straight Victory

BALTIMORE, Maryland—The Mount Union women's volleyball team upset No. 8 Nationally ranked Johns Hopkins in four sets, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-16 to run its win streak to a dozen straight on Saturday afternoon.
 
Before the upset of the weekend the Purple Raiders (12-2) took down Salisbury (7-4) in a sweep with scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16.
 
The Purple Raiders were led in kills by junior Darby Leininger (Chardon / Baumont) with 10 kills while junior Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) had eight.
 
Junior Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) had seven total blocks while Leininger and freshman Ava Bolen (Wellsburg, W. Va. / Brooke) and Riley Meister (Madison) each had three.
 
Junior setter Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) and freshman setter Melissa Hansen (Hudson) had 19 and 13 assists.
 
Bartell along with freshman Libero Averi Haley (Orrville) had 14 digs while Hansen finished with 11.
 
Coming into the match it was a matchup of big blocks as both teams ranked in the top 16 for blocks per set as Mount Union finished the match with 10 blocks to Salisbury's two. The Raiders used that to their advantage hitting .258 percent to Salisbury's .038.
 
In the second match of the day Mount Union dropped the first set 14-25 to No. 8 Johns Hopkins (9-3) and then rattled off three straight with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-16.
 
The Raiders found Bartell for 17 kills with a hitting percent of .311 while Leinger had nine kills in the match. Once again Meyer was huge in the block for Mount Union picking up another seven blocks in the match.
 
Kildow and Hansen both had double digit assists with 19 and 15 while Kildow had 15 digs as well in the match.
 
Senior Adrian Petrisko (Elyria) led Mount Union in digs with 16 and Haley finished with 12.
 
Mount Union once again used the block well against Johns Hopkins picking up eight blocks causing Hopkins to have 10 more hitting errors than the Raiders. Mount Union was tied in service aces with four but made eight less serving errors in the match.
 
Mount Union now heads into Ohio Athletic Conference play with an away matchup against No. 24 Ohio Northern at 1 PM.
