TIFFIN, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team used a 21-6 second quarter to run away from Heidelberg winning 82-54 in Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (7-8, 4-4 OAC) were led by the freshman duo of
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) and
Reese Triplett (New Philadelphia / Tuscarawas Central Catholic). Mason finished the day shooting eight of 10 from the field for a game-high 19 points while Triplett was three of four from the three-line scoring 13 points.
Sophomore
Addison Mucci (Canton / St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with 12 points connecting on four threes while grabbing eight rebounds.
Heidelberg (3-12, 0-8) was led by the duo of Morgan Altenburger and Amari Slaughter with 15 points each.
FIRST QUARTER
Heidelberg got the first bucket of the game with a three but a quick response from Mason as she got two layups to go and a layup from Triplett gave Mount Union a 6-5 lead. Heidelberg pushed the lead out to 10-7 but a three from Mucci and layups from Mason and junior
Dae Dae Nash (Akron / Buchtel) gave Mount Union a 14-11. A three from Heidelberg to tie the game was quickly erased with a layup from Mason and a three from Triplett.
SECOND QUARTER
The quarter began with two free throws for Heidelberg but then Mount Union dominated the rest of the quarter with a press that Heidelberg could not figure out. Mount Union went on a 21-1 run with eight different scorers as they caused seven Heidelberg turnovers in the run. Mount Union went into the halftime break with a 40-20 lead.
THIRD QUARTER
Heidelberg once again got the first basket with a three pointer but an 8-0 run with two layups from Mason and Hudik gave Mount Union its largest lead of the game at 48-23. Heidelberg used two separate runs of 6-0 and 4-0 to get within 18 but Mount Union responded with an 11-2 run to end the quarter as Triplett and Mason scored five each in the run and junior
Ali Hudik (Mentor / Lake Catholic) added a layup to take a lead of 64-37 into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
The final quarter began with a bucket from Heidelberg but as Mount Union did all day responded with a 9-2 run this time grabbing its largest lead of the day at 73-41. Mount Union kept a lead of 23 plus the rest of the way taking the victory.
Mount Union remains on the road heading to Marietta on Wednesday with a 7 PM tip off.
