Men's Basketball: No. 15 Raiders Outlast Marietta in OAC Battle

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team beat Marietta 92-84 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.

The Purple Raiders (14-2, 7-2 OAC) had four players score in double figures with senior Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with a 26-point, 11-rebound double-double. Senior Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) added in 18 points and sophomore Corey Hudson (Columbus / Pickerington) scored 13. Sophomore Caleb Laurich (Akron / Copley) rounded out the Raiders in double digits with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.

The Pioneers (11-5, 5-4 OAC) were led by De'Ovion Price who scored a team-high 19 points, David Sanford who added in 16 and Sahmi Willoughby who scored 13 points.

The Raiders jumped out to an early 9-2 lead just a minute into the game, the Pioneers would answer with back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to three with 18:11 to play in the half. Mount Union would then go on a massive 33-14 run over the next 10:01 to take a 42-20 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. Marietta would answer by outscoring the Raiders 23-14 over the final seven minutes of the half as Mount Union would take a 56-43 lead into the halftime break.

Marietta would slowly keep chipping away at the Raider lead over the first 13 and a half minutes of the second half before a quick 7-0 run would tie the game at 79 with 5:19 left to play in the game. Mount Union would then go on to outscore the Pioneers 13-5 over the final 4:52 of the game to cap off a 92-84 victory.

The Raiders hit the road next for an OAC matchup with Wilmington on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. in Wilmington.
