Men's Basketball: No. 19 Mount Union Runs Past Alfred State for First Win

AFRED, N.Y. – The no. 19 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Alfred State 100-63 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening.

The Purple Raiders (1-1) had four players score in double figures with fifth-year Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with a game-high 22-point, 12-rebound double-double. Junior Corey Hudson (Columbus / Pickerington) added in 15 points with sophomore Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) and junior Caleb Laurich (Akron / Copley) rounding out the Raiders in double digits, scoring 15 and 10 respectively.

The Pioneers (0-2) were led by Michael Miller who scored a team-high 17 points.

Mount Union would jump out to a quick 6-0 lead before Alfred State would come back to tie the game at eight apiece with just over 16 minutes to play in the first half. Both teams would trade baskets back and forth over the next several minutes before the Raiders would go on a massive 16-2 run over the next four minutes of game time sparked by three straight Laurich baskets to take a 36-19 lead with 5:54 to play in the first half. The Pioneers would answer with an 11-2 run of their own over the next 3:19 to cut the lead down to eight with two and a half minutes remaining in the half. Mount Union would go on to outscore Alfred State 6-2 over the final two and a half minutes to take a 46-34 lead into the halftime break.

The Raiders would open the second half with a 16-4 run over the first 3:14 of the half to stretch their lead to 24 points with 16:32 to play. Mount Union would continue adding to their lead, going on a 23-5 run over 5:38 of game time to extend their lead to 85-47 with nine and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Pioneers wouldn't be able to get closer than 34 over the final nine minutes of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 100-63.

The Raiders return home next when they host SUNY Brockport on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
