ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team led wire to wire in a 79-41 win over Westminster (PA) in the Friends For Life Tournament Saturday afternoon advancing to the championship game on Sunday.
The Purple Raiders (1-0) had 18 different scorers and was led by sophomore
Abby Muckleroy (Canfield) with 15 points and nine rebounds and freshman
Chelsea Evanich (Alliance / Marlington) with 10 points.
Westminster (0-1) was led by Katie Maryo with 15 points and Emily Hess with six rebounds.
First Quarter
Mount Union got off to an 8-0 lead with four different scorers hitting the score book immediately. A bucket from Westminster was followed up by a 6-0 run from Mount Union taking a 14-2 lead. Both teams grabbed buckets in the final 25 seconds as Mount Union took a 16-4 lead into the first break.
Second Quarter
Another 8-0 run to start the quarter as four Raiders once again scored pushing the lead out to 20 with 6:47 left in the quarter. A free throw from Westminster was followed up by a 5-0 run from Mount Union. Westminster closed the score to 29-7 with 3:52 remaining but Mount Union finished the half out on a 7-0 run to take a 36-7 lead into halftime.
Second Half
Westminster could not get closer than 26 the rest of the game as Mount Union got its largest lead of 43 with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Mount Union will now take on Manchester (Ind) in the championships tomorrow at 3 PM. Manchester defeated Kalamazoo (Mich) in the other match up coming from behind to win 67-59.
