ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 18 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup to No. 1 John Carroll 74-66 on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (17-5, 10-5 OAC) had two players score in double figures with senior
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) leading the way with 19 points and sophomore
Caleb Laurich (Akron / Copley) added in a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double.
The Blue Streaks (21-1, 15-0 OAC) were led Luke Frazier who scored 17 points and Luka Eller added in 13 points.
Mount Union jumped out to a 12-6 lead just under seven minutes into the game. Both teams would trade baskets over the next several minutes before John Carroll went on an 11-3 run over 3:26 of game time to take a 29-27 lead with 4:18 remaining in the first half. Neither team would be able to gain an edge over the final four minutes of the half as the Blue Streaks would take a one point 37-36 lead into the halftime break.
The Raiders would open the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 46-39 lead with just under 16 minutes left to play in the game. Both teams would trade baskets over the next five minutes of game time before John Carroll would go on a 15-1 run over the next 6:07 of game time to take a 63-58 lead with 4:54 remaining in the game. Mount Union wouldn't be able to get close than three over the final four minutes as the Blue Streaks would go on to win 74-66.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg on Saturday, February 10 at 1 p.m.
