Baseball: Viamonte Hits Walk-Off, Purple Raiders Sweep Alma

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team won game one, 5-4, in dramatic fashion, followed by a dominant 14-3 game two victory in its sweep over Alma on Saturday.

In game one, Mount Union (12-4) was hitless through four innings, however, came up big in the fifth with five hits, highlighted by home runs by graduate Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls) and junior Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark). Alma (8-4 ) rallied with a run in the sixth and the eighth, followed a 2-run home run by Kevin Tuttle in the ninth to give the Scots their first lead of the game. The Raiders, however, responded with a rally of their own as junior Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Coral Gables) blasted a 2-run shot to right center field with the bases loaded for the walk-off. Junior pitcher Zachary Breeden (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder) started and only gave up one run off four hits and struck out five in seven innings of work in the no decision. Freshman Chase Mayer (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) got the win, the first of his collegiate career, being the pitcher on record and striking out the final out in the top of the ninth.

Mount Union went on a tear in game two scoring two runs in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, five in the sixth, and three in the eighth. The Raiders tallied six extra-base hits, highlighted by three home runs: Schilling, graduate Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic), and junior Nathan Grega (Hartville, Ohio / Lake). Junior Joe Lenart (Cleveland, Ohio / Garfield Heights) added two doubles, while Viamonte added another double. Sophomore Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) improved to 4-1 on the season, pitching 6.0 innings and only allowing two runs and striking out four.

Mount Union is back on the diamond Tuesday, March 19 vs La Roche for a nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
