ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union baseball team swept Marietta and shut out the Pioneers in a game for the first time in program history at Rafeld-Rogers Field on Sunday in both teams' Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener.
In game one, junior
Zachary Breeden (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder) pitched a 9-inning shutout to improve to 1-1 on the season. Breeden only allowed five hits and tied his season high with nine strikeouts. Mount Union (14-4, 2-0 OAC) scored the lone run of the game in the sixth when graduate
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) scored on a wild pitch. Mount won, 1-0.
In the nightcap, the Raiders were down 5-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Freshman
Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green) brought home Mazza, followed by freshman
Christopher Maurer (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) scoring the game-winning runs with a two-run single to go ahead 6-5 - the final score. Freshman
Chase Mayer (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) earned the win after coming in for 2.1 innings of relief, improving to 2-0. Mayer only gave up one run (none earned) off two hits and struck out two.
Marietta (8-10, 0-2 OAC) was receiving national votes coming into today's doubleheader.
Mount Union is back in action Tuesday, March 26 with a nine-inning game at Adrian College in Adrian, Mich., starting at 5 p.m.
