CINCINNATI, Ohio—The Mount Union men's volleyball team swept Mount St. Joseph 25-21, 25-20 and 28-26 on Saturday in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play.
The Purple Raiders (9-8, 3-1 MCVL) were led by
Jack McClure (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) with 15 kills.
Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) led Mount Union with 28 assists while McClure and
Aaron Armour () each finished with nine digs.
Mount St. Joseph (4-12, 0-4 MCVL) was led by Jude Lewis with10 kills, Ben Carmosino with 27 assists and Roger Wilcox with 13 digs.
First Set
Mount Union started the game with a 5-2 lead with three errors from MSJ. MSJ went on a 3-1 run to get within 6-5 but Mount Union grabbed a 11-6 lead thanks to a 5-1 run which included two blocks from the Raiders. MSJ responded with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the match at 12-11 but once again another big run from Mount Union this time a 6-2 run took a 17-14 lead. A quick point from MSJ was quickly erased as Mount Union went on a 6-2 run to take a 23-17 lead and take the set.
Second Set
Mount Union grabbed the first two points of the set but MSJ responded with two of its own. A run of back and forth scoring from the teams had five different ties until an 8-1 run from Mount Union gave them a 14-7 lead. MSJ would respond but never got closer than four points three different times as Mount Union won the set.
Third Set
Mount Union got two points to start the final set as well. MSJ responded with a 9-4 run to take a 9-6 lead. Mount Union found its footing though with a 4-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. MSJ used a 5-1 run I the middle of the set leading 17-14 and then 20-17. Mount Union however tied the game up at 22 with a 5-2 run with both teams tying at 22 through 26 as Mount Union ended the set on a 3-0 run.
Mount Union now takes on Trine in Angola, Indiana on Friday at 7 PM in MCVL play.
