UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday evening, winning game one 8-2 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings.
The Purple Raiders (23-4, 8-0 OAC) would strike first in game one when junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI double down the left field line and then sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) hit an RBI single that brought in George to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Blue Streaks (2-19, 1-7 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Kaylyn Odelli hit a solo homerun to left center to cut the lead down to a run. Mount Union would add to their lead in the third inning, scoring four runs with RBIs coming from Cahill, junior
Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) and sophomore
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) to stretch the lead to 6-1. The Raiders would add another run in the fourth this time coming from an RBI single from sophomore
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) making the lead six runs.
John Carroll would cut into the lead in the sixth inning when Odelli hit her second homerun of the game to cut the lead to 7-2. However, the Raiders would add another run in the seventh, coming off another RBI from Cahill to push the lead back out to six runs. The Blue Streaks wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the seventh as the Raiders would go on to take game one 8-2.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up two runs on four hits and struck out 10 in the complete game win.
The Raiders would strike first again in game two when sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit a leadoff homerun to start the game, then Cahill would hit an RBI single later in the inning to take a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first. Mount Union would add three more runs in the second inning, the first coming off a sacrifice bunt from freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) and then Reicosky stole second and Mercer scored on the throw and the came off an RBI single from George to stretch the lead to five runs.
The Raiders would add three more runs in the third inning with RBIs coming from Hahn, Mercer and Reicosky to make the lead 8-0. The Blue Streaks were unable to plate any runs over the next two innings as Mount Union would go on to take game two 8-0 in five innings.
Freshman
Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and picked up her first career win, giving up zero runs on just one hit and striking out two in two innings of work. Freshman
Emma Reese (Alliance) would come in to pitch the final three innings in relief and gave up zero runs on three hits.
The Raiders return home next when they host Wilmington in an OAC matchup on Saturday, April 20 at 1 and 3 p.m. at the 23
rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
