Men's Volleyball: Raiders Pick Up Senior Day Victory

ALLIANCE, Ohio—In a rematch of last years Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League tournament championship Mount Union got the victory this time in a four-set victory over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday for Senior Day.
 
Mount Union honored senior Jonathon Owen (Akron / Archbishop Hoban) before the match as the Purple Raiders dropped the first set 25-23 and then took the last three sets 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21.
 
The Purple Raiders (13-9, 7-2 MCVL) were led by Jack McClure (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) with 11 kills.
 
Will Heeney (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) led the team in assists with 29, Peyton Koszelak (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) and Heeney both had nine digs as McClure had three aces while Owen finished with two.
 
Baldwin Wallace (13-13, 7-2 MCVL) was led Nick Irelan with 15 kills, Brandon Long with 46 assists and Irelan with nine digs.
 
SET ONE
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to leads of 3-0, 5-2 and 6-3 early on the first set but Mount Union got its first lead of the day at 10-9 off a 3-0 run which included a service ace from Owen. Mount Union got its largest lead at 14-12 but Baldwin Wallace got the lead again at 15-12. With the lead at 16-15 for Mount Union, Baldwin Wallace responded with a 7-2 run to take a 22-18 lead. Baldwin Wallace finished the set off winning 25-20.
 
SET TWO
Both teams battled through the first couple points in the set as neither team could get a lead larger than three until a 7-1 run for Mount Union pushed the lead out to 14-7. Baldwin Wallace responded with an 8-2 run to get within two at 17-15. Mount Union however took control of the set with a run of 8-5 to win the set 25-20.
 
SET THREE
Once again the set started with neither getting a lead larger than two but Mount Union went on a 7-2 run this time taking a 14-9 lead. Baldwin Wallace responded with a run of 5-2 to get within two at 16-14. Mount Union used a 5-1 run taking a 20-15 lead and then finished the set off on a 3-1 run taking it 25-19.
 
SET FOUR
Mount Union got off to a hot start with a 7-1 lead and then grew the lead out to 11-3 and 17-8. Baldwin Wallace did come back getting to within two at 23-21 but Mount Union held on getting the final two points winning 25-21.
 
With the win Mount Union improved its seed from the four to the three seed for the MCVL tournament next weekend taking on the two seed in Baldwin Wallace. The tournament will be hosted by Wittenberg in Springfield, Ohio on Friday and Saturday.
