ALLIANCE, Ohio—Mount Union's women's basketball outscored Marietta 56-39 over the final two quarters to take an 84-68 win in Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday night.
The Purple Raiders (8-10, 3-8 OAC) used a 20-point, eight rebound game from
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) and a 19-point seven rebound game from
Dae Dae Nash (Akron / Buchtel) to grab the victory.
Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) also finished with double digits for Mount Union with 11.
Marietta (11-7, 5-6 OAC) was led by Adi Hill with 15 points and Hannah Kroft with 13 points.
Marietta got the first bucket of the game but a three from
Hailey Haywood (Barberton) gave Mount Union the lead. Both teams traded baskets until a 6-0 run, as Conroy had four points and Nash had two, pushed Mount Union's lead out to 13-10. Marietta got a bucket to end the quarter as Mount Union led 13-12.
Neither team in the second quarter could get a lead larger than three as Mount Union had that twice at 15-12 and 17-14 and Marietta had it three times at 20-17, 23-20 and 26-23. Mount Union battled back to take a 28-26 lead but a three from Marietta gave them a halftime lead of 29-28.
Marietta got its largest lead of the day at 34-30 but a 10-0 run as Nash led the way with four points taking a 40-34 lead. Both teams traded baskets once again the rest of the way as neither team led by more than six as Mount Union used a 4-0 run to end the quarter taking a 53-49 lead.
Mount Union got its largest lead out of the break going on a 5-0 run as Nash connected on a three and McKayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) hit two free throws taking a 58-49 lead. Marietta got within four at 58-54 with 8:23 remaining in the game. Over the next three minutes Mount Union went on a 12-6 run taking a 70-60 lead. Marietta closed the game down to seven points but Mount Union connected on seven of eight free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Mount Union will now take on Wilmington on Saturday at 1 PM. The Raiders are asking people to wear pink as this game will be their Breast Cancer Awareness Game and will have a bake sale outside the gym for purchase.
