ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's soccer team defeated Trine 3-1 in their season opener on Friday evening.
The Thunder (0-1) would strike first in the second minute of the game when Gavin Hardy was able to find the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
The Purple Raiders (1-0) would answer with a goal of their own, scoring off the foot of junior
Dom Kustura (Willowick / Eastlake North), senior
Zander Plizga (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton) picked up the assist to tie the game at a goal apiece in the 24
th minute. Mount Union would take their first lead of the game when sophomore
Jakob Sacher (Buffalo, N.Y. / Nichols) scored his first career goal off an assist from senior
Nyiles Spann (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) to take a 2-1 lead in the 39
th minute.
The Raiders would then add another goal in the 59
th minute when sophomore
Amir Spratt (Kent / Kent Roosevelt) found the back of the net off an assist from Kustura to stretch the lead to two goals.
Trine would have an answer over the remainder of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 3-1.
The Raiders are home again next when they host Waynesburg on Sunday, August 31 at 4 p.m. at Kehres Stadium in Alliance.
