BEREA, Ohio – The No. 2 Mount Union football team started its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule with a 42-23 win at Baldwin Wallace on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Freshman QB
Mikey Maloney (Concord Township, OH/Painesville Riverside) went 22 of 32 for 263 yards and two touchdowns. 117 of those yards went to junior WR
Davion Grant (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) (including a 44-yard touchdown), who posted his first 100-yard game as a Purple Raider with a season-high seven catches.
Maloney's first touchdown was arguably the play of the game, as he connected with senior tight end
Wyatt Stiehl (Tampa, Fla./East Lake) with a touch pass in the back of the end zone, and Stiehl corralled it with one hand to put Mount Union (3-0, 1-0 OAC) back on top 21-17 with three seconds left in the first half.
"Our offense set up a great drive, Coach (offensive coordinator Junior) Collins gave me an opportunity to make a play," said Stiehl. "I made the play. That's it. It was a blast."
Maloney made it two straight drives with a touchdown pass as the Purple Raiders scored on the opening drive of the second half with the 44-yarder to Grant.
Senior WR
Nick Turner (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) had 91 yards off six grabs. Senior
Shaun Thomas (Lima, OH/Lima Central Catholic) ran for a season-high 84 yards with a career-high two touchdowns (3 and 24 yards, respectively).
Mount Union scored on its opening possession as graduate RB
Darnell Williams (Cleveland, OH/John Adams) capped off a 7-play, 62-yard drive with a five-yard rushing touchdown—his fourth rushing score of the season.
Sophomore RB
Kayden Minner (New Madrid, MO/New Madrid County Central) capped off the scoring with a 2-yard run for his first career collegiate score.
Senior LB
Weston Arthur (Homerville, OH/Northwestern) led the defense with a career-high 10 tackles. Senior
Kaleb Brown (La Plata, MD/La Plata) had a sack and now has 24.5 for his career, ranking eighth in program history.
Mount Union outscored Baldwin Wallace, 21-6, in the second half.
The Purple Raiders have now won 150 straight road conference games (77 straight overall regular season games—the longest streak across all divisions in college football).
Baldwin Wallace drops its first game of the season, falling to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Mount Union will next host Otterbein for its homecoming game Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 1:30 PM kickoff.
