The no. 4 nationally ranked Mount Union Purple Raiders secured another Ohio Athletic Conference victory with a 91-78 home victory over the Capital Comets.
The Purple Raiders (16-0, 7-0 OAC) had outstanding performances from their starting guards. Sophomore guard Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) shined, scoring 27 points and grabbing eight rebounds while shooting 52.2-percent from the field and 50-percent from three-point range. Junior guard Kevin Hamilton (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) contributed 18 points and delivered a team-high six assists, serving as the key playmaker for the Purple Raiders. Junior Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) added 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Comets (6-10, 1-6 OAC) were led by Se'Ron Calloway-White who scored a team-high 25 points and Dallas Tucker who added 22.
Mount Union started strong, taking a 21-5 lead with 14:05 left in the first half. However, Capital kept narrowing the gap, reducing the deficit to 42-30 with 4:39 remaining in the second half. The Raiders regained momentum before halftime, extending their lead to 54-38.
In the second half, Capital continued to put up a fight and, with 16:08 remaining, trimmed the Raiders' lead to 58-50. However, Mount Union was ultimately able to separate themselves in the end.
What separated the Raiders from Capital was their performance in several key areas. They won the points off turnovers battle 19-7, secured bench points 10-0, and dominated points in the paint with a score of 42-18. Junior center Shaun Vaden (Cleveland / Cornerstone Christian) was a standout, scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and recording five blocks while dominating inside the paint on both ends of the court. Mount Union would go on to win 91-78, getting the final say in the matchup.
The Raiders go back on the road next as they continue OAC play against Heidelberg on Wednesday, January 21 at 7 p.m. in Tiffin.
