Men's Basketball: No. 4 Raiders Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The no. 4 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference 83-76 against Heidelberg on Wednesday evening.

The Purple Raiders (16-1, 7-1 OAC) had three players score in double figures with junior Kevin Hamilton (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) leading the way with 16 points. Sophomore Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) would score 14 points with junior Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) added 13 to round out the Raiders in double digits.

The Student Princes (10-7, 4-4 OAC) were led by Brady Bosma who scored a game-high 19 points, Markell Johnson-Nichols added 16 and Marcos Vazquez and Riley Gossom both scored 15 points.

Heidelberg would jump out a 15-2 lead over the first five and a half minutes of game time, Mount Union would answer with a quick 7-0 run over the next 1:44 of action to cut the lead down to six with 12:47 to play in the first half. The Student Princes would then go on a 10-4 run to push their lead back out to 12 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. The teams would go back and forth over the remainder of the half with the lead never growing to more than 19 and never getting smaller than 10 as Heidelberg would take a 45-34 lead into the halftime break.

After a quick 6-0 run by the Student Princes to open the second half, the Raiders would answer with a massive 21-4 run over the next six and a half minutes of game time to tie the game at 55 apiece with 11:46 left to play in the game. Heidelberg would respond with an 8-0 run over the next 2:31 of action to reclaim their lead at 63-55. Mount Union would answer once again, however, going on a 10-2 run to tie the game once again with six and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Raiders would then go on to claim their first lead of the game at 74-70 with 4:42 left to play before Heidelberg would close the game on a 13-2 run to take the 83-76 victory.

The Raiders are on the road again next when they head to Ada on Saturday, January 24 for an OAC matchup with Ohio Northern at 1 p.m.
