ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg 82-45 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (13-4, 5-3 OAC) had three players score in double figures with junior
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) leading the way with 13 points, junior
Reese Triplett (New Philadelphia / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) added 12 points and sophomore
Kelley Griffin (Bellbrook) rounded out the Raiders in double digits with 11 points.
The Student Princes (1-14, 0-7 OAC) were led by Tori See who scored a game-high 14 points.
The two teams would go back and forth over the first half of the first quarter, with Heidelberg holding a narrow 8-7 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter. However, the Raiders would go on to close the quarter with a 17-4 run to take a 12-point 24-12 lead into the second quarter. Mount Union would open the second quarter with a 17-6 run over the first 5:03 of the period to stretch their lead to 23 with five minutes remaining in the first half. The two teams would trade baskets over the final five minutes of the half as Mount Union would take a 25-point 46-21 lead into the halftime break. After trailing 8-7 through the first five minutes of the game the Raiders would go on to outscore the Student Princes 39-13 over the final 15 minutes of the half.
Mount Union would open the third quarter with a 9-1 run over the first over the first 2:48 of the quarter to push their lead out to 33 points. The teams would trade baskets back and forth over the final 7:12 of the third quarter with Heidelberg never getting closer than 29 and the Raiders taking their largest lead of the game at 70-33 heading into the fourth and final quarter. Over the course of the fourth quarter the Student Princes weren't able to get closer than 34 as Mount Union would go on to win 82-45.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Ada for an OAC matchup with Ohio Northern on Saturday, January 24 at 3:30 p.m.
